Calamus Root is a herbaceous perennial growing in marshes, swamps, and other wetland habitats. Native to Eastern Countries but have been brought to Europe, Japan and North America. The entire plant is aromatic and has sword-shaped leaves and tiny, greenish-yellow flowers and can also be known as Sweet Flag, is a part of Ayurvetic medicine. It is also used for luck, external wounds, and as a protection against hunger and poverty. The rhizome may have a poisonous effect under certain conditions causing disturbed digestion and in severe cases,gastro-enteritis.

Roots of this herb have been used in both Chinese and Indian traditional medicine practices, but in the United States derivative products have been prohibited for concerns over its carcinogenic effects.
